The U.S. National Park Service manages 63 National Parks and a total of 433 different units (including National Historic Sites, National Monuments, National Recreations area, and much more). But this country has an unbelievable number of gorgeous landscapes, some protected and some unprotected, that could easily exist as National Parks.

Carter from That Is Interesting set out to list 21 sites that he believes should be national parks. These are all sites that he’s visited (aside from the honorable mentions), and it’s hard to argue against many of them (though I’m not sure how I feel about the National Mall being a National Park…).

Carter’s list is as follows:

  • Scablands
  • Mt. Hood
  • Craters of the Moon
  • Big Sur
  • Point Reyes
  • Eastern Sierra
  • Lake Tahoe
  • Valley of Fire
  • Black Canyon of the Colorado
  • Sedona
  • Monument Valley
  • Shiprock
  • Royal Gorge
  • Bonneville Salt Flats
  • Black Hills
  • Harpers Ferry
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes
  • North Shore
  • El Yunque
  • San Juan
  • National Mall
