Spring plowing begins @ Yellowstone National Park
Spring plowing begins @ Yellowstone National Park

It might still feel like the middle of winter in Yellowstone National Park with lows of 0 degrees and snow in the forecast the but today marks start of the 3 month long road clearing process in preparation for Yellowstone’s spring opening.

Spring plowing has begun and will continue as segments of roads close to all vehicles until mid-April to allow for ease of removal. All commercially-guided oversnow access is scheduled to end March 15th. As always, the road between the North and Northeast entrances is open year-round to regular vehicles.

“Each spring, park roads close while crews clear a winter’s worth of packed snow from the Grand Loop. Depending on conditions, the amount of road cleared in a day can be measured in miles…or yards. Here’s a peek at what crews face while they ready the park for peak season.” -Yellowstone National Park

With some roads open, some closed, and others only accessible by snowmobiles and snowcoaches, it can be quite tricky to navigate Yellowstone National Park this time of year. If you are interested in visiting in the near future, please reference real-time updates provided by Yellowstone HERE.
