Skiing natural arch @ Bernese Alps, Switzerland

A pair of backcountry skiers in southeastern part of Switzerland’s Bernese Alps went on a pretty serious mission to ski a natural arch that started with a cablecar ride followed by some exposed descents and ski tours where they encountering plenty of surprises and challenges along the way.

The mission to find the arch was inspired by an Instagram post which led tireless online research before the finally located the rare natural feature. Using a drone to do live reconnaissance along the way, Paul de Groot and Loïc Isliker managed to ski under the arch and make it safely home.

While many of us head to the mountains to escape the trappings of modern technology, using it in the backcountry certainly has its advantages when used properly.
