Highmount, New York — Yesterday was a windy day for the Northeastern ski industry, which led to some not even operating for the day. This included Belleayre, which even saw damaged to one of its lifts from the wind.

Yesterday, Belleayre Mountain announced that the Belleayre Express chairlift will be down for an indefinite period due to a tree falling on the lift line. Belleayre is working with Doppelmayr to figure out how long the repair process will take.

In terms of the visuals from what happened, users on social media were able to find footage from Belleayre’s webcam showing the chairlift’s haul rope in a peculiar position.

Opened back in 2006, the Belleayre Express was originally known as the Superchief Quad chairlift. During the 2020-21 season, the detachable high-speed quad chairlift was renamed to the Belleayre Express.

So next time you criticize a ski area for not running a chairlift because it’s too windy, remind yourself of this situation at Belleayre.
