New Orleans, Louisiana — The southern portion of the U.S. just got dumped on. That was not a sentence I was expecting to write this winter, but we live in unpredictable times.
While many in the United States’ ski industry are desperate for some snow, cold weather has been occurring throughout the South. This cold pattern lead to rare Gulf Coast. In New Orleans, heavy snowfall blanketed the region, leading to many snowball fights, skijoring courses, ice skating on Canal Street, and a few bringing out their skis to shred the (very flat) French Quarter.
The National Weather Service reported that the city received 9.5 inches of snowfall, while the airport got 8 inches. However, other parts of the city saw more. Meteorologist Payton Malone of WWL-TV shared a timelapse of a snow stake he set up at his house. He refers to it as a snowboard, so I was going to be a wiseass and say that’s not a snowboard, but they’re not as familiar with our wintry sports down there. His snowstake saw roughly 12 inches of snow, a shocking tally for the Crescent City.
