A view of Devil's Castle at Alta.

Alta, Utah After a slow start to the season, the past few weeks have been much kinder to the Alta Ski Area. This past weekend exemplified this, as what was expected to be a small storm system delivered over two feet of fresh powder for Alta. It helped them surpass the 200 inch mark on the season.

This recent snowfall, along with a dry stretch that allowed for avalanche mitigation has allowed Alta to open two of its iconic black diamond trails. The first was Devil’s Castle. Surrounded by an imposing rock face, the steep bowl provides for some deep powder for those who are among the first to enter.

The Daily Pow captured the opening experience, getting in some fresh powder turns and huge cliff sends.

The other opening was Castle Apron. To reach this, guests traverse through Devil’s Castle and then boot pack up to ski an open face.

Both trails are open sporadically, as avalanche mitigation after snowstorms is often needed to make it safe for those who want to ski it.
