A full moon view of Tuckerman Ravine.

Mt. Washington, New Hampshire– Most people tend to ski Tuckerman Ravine during the day for obvious reasons. However, one skier showed that it’s possible to ski there in the evening.

In March 2020, Chris Shane filmed Andrew Drummond, an avid backcountry skier who is the founder of the White Mountain Ski Co, shred Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines during a full moon. While Andrew skis with a headlamp and his own personal camera, Chris captures the scenes from across the Mt. Washington Valley. The Adventures of Chris And Chris video, which was just released last Saturday, showed how tricky such an expedition can be.

One skeptical commentator on YouTube asked what the point of trying to ski under a full moon was: Here was the response from the Adventures of Chris And Chris YouTube page:

“One might ask the same question to someone who just ran a marathon, completed their first triathlon, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, went skydiving, biked their first 20 miles, did their very first backcountry overnight camping trip, stayed up all night to look up and marvel at the night sky, the stars and moon the Milky Way galaxy. Because they believed they could do it, it called to them and thus it was worth doing. The very essence of being human, in our opinion. And that’s worth something. If that doesn’t answer then we really can’t help explain further.”

Obviously, it should be noted that only the most tenured backcountry skiers should try something like this. As always, please bring a beacon, probe, and shovel in the backcountry.
