At approximately 9:25am local time on December 26, a serious traffic accident closed Highway 40 in Grand County, Colorado by Mile Post 228.

According to a press release from the Fraser Winter Park Police Department, there was one fatality and four occupants were left with significant injuries. The Fraser Winter Park Police Department, Grand County EMS, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, and Colorado Department of Transportation all responded to the scene.

The accident occurred in the Town of Fraser. An accident investigation is currently ongoing between the police department, Grand County Coroner’s Office, and the Colorado State Patrol.

For the foreseeable future, Highway 40 is closed in both directions around the accident, westbound at Kings Crossing and eastbound at Old Victory Road. An alternative route using Old Victory Road connects the towns of Fraser and Winter Park.
