Sad news out of the Virginia side of the Blue Ridge Parkway where a hiker passed away on Monday, November 11.

According to a press release from the National Park Service, the hiker suffered cardiac arrest while hiking along the Humpback Rocks trail. Dispatchers were alerted to the incident at approximately at approximately 3:22 p.m.

When rangers and first responders arrived on the scene, the individual was receiving CPR from other hikers. Unfortunately 53-year-old Sharath Jois of Mysore, India died at the scene.

The Humpback Rocks trail travels 1 mile to Humpback Rocks, though hikers can continue further to Humpback Mountain and the Humpback Rocks Picnic Area. A strenuous 700-foot climb accesses views of the the Rockfish and Shenandoah Valleys.

No further detail has been provided by the National Park Service at this time.
