Loose rock nearly strikes free solo climber.
Loose rock nearly strikes free solo climber.

Wild moment caught on camera above Upper Kananaskis Lake south of Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada where a climber on a 2,000 foot multi-pitch ascent of Mt. Indefatigable sent a loose rock tumbling towards a free solo climber below.

This route called “Joy” is known for its loose rock hazards which are particularly acute during the early season freeze thaw cycle. Thankfully the rock missed the free soloist who eventually caught up with the climbing group and stopped for a quick chat before passing them on his way to the summit.

This is a great example of the importance of wearing a helmet while climbing which can help protect against head injuries in falls and falling debris. To learn more about how mountain climbing helmets are certified and rated read THIS PAPER by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation. Be safe, have fun, wear a helmet.
