Alberta — One of the most anticipated shows returning next year is The Last of Us. The video game series turned TV show gives a glimpse of life during a zombie apocalypse. The TV show drew lots of praise for its first season, and its second season appears to be another heart-churning experience. I’m not a video game buff, but this was a great show.

Last week, HBO released the official teaser trailer for season two of the show. Much of it happens in the community of Jackson, where survivors of the apocalypse live. However, the filming crews used a variety of locations to capture the feel of this community, including an abandoned Canadian ski resort.
Around the 1:14 mark of the trailer, you can see a couple of people on horseback riding through a snowy landscape. Zooming in, you can see an abandoned chairlift in the background, along with various trails and an impressive rocky backdrop.
This likely means that Fortress Mountain was a filming location for the Last Of Us. The first source of evidence is a CJAY-FM show that discussed reports that they were filming at Fortress Mountain.
The second source is from Gabriel Luna, one of the show’s stars, who shared a photo of Fortress Mountain’s base lodge.
Fortress Mountain has a fascinating history. Opening in 1969, It was known for its architecturally brilliant base lodge, stunning backdrop, and varied terrain. However, the ski area closed in 2006 due to financial issues.
The slopes are currently used for cat-skiing. While the current owners plan to rebuild and reopen the ski resort, a definitive timeline has yet to be officially announced. Since closing for lift-serviced skiing and riding, Fortress has also been a filming location for various TV shows and films, like The Revenant, Brokeback Mountain, and Inception.
