This solo hiker who was stranded and required a helicopter evacuation from the Heavenly Twins double summit mountain in Ravalli County, Montana broke the cardinal rule when dealing with anything involving helicopter flights “Do What You Are Told.”
If you are riding in or in the proximity of a helicopter, there are strict safety protocols that you will be made aware of and no matter what the severity of the emergency situation, not following them can it make it far worse.
A helicopter from Two Bear Air Rescue was called in to rescue the hiker and were hoisting up him when he failed to follow the information given in the pre hoist briefing. Specifically, the hiker grabbed the cable on ascent which could lead to a catastrophic failure. When helicopter professionals tell you something whether it be the pilot, a rescuer or ground crew, it is of life and death importance that you follow their directions precisely.
“Note, it is imperative for the safety of the crew and victim that you follow the directions of the rescue specialist and any information given in the pre hoist briefing.” -Two Bear Air Rescue
