Brazilian Lucas Fink is both a professional skimboarder and a big wave surfer. He began skimboarding competitively at 10, back in 2009, and has since become a top athlete in the sport. He won the United Skim Tour overall title in 2019, and is a Brazilian Professional Champion, South American Champion and World Champion. But perhaps the most insane thing he does comes when he hits the world’s largest waves on his skimboard, outside of competition.
Skimboarding looks kind of similar to surfing, but, rather than paddling out to the waves, a skimboarder typically starts out from the shore, catching the shorebreak waves. Larger waves are traditionally avoided on skimboarders, but the best of the best do whatever they want.
There are a bunch of different types of skimboards, made with different materials and shapes, and meant for different types of skimboarding. Typically, though, a skimboard is shorter and thinner than a surfboard.
