This week, Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee for President Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her Vice President pick. While Walz hails from a winter sports hub in Minnesota, it still may come as a surprise that his daughter is an avid skier.
Hope Walz is one of Walz’s two children. She graduated from Montana State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and a Minor in Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. She now works as a social worker at a homeless shelter in Bozeman. In the winter, she also helps people out on the slopes.
A recent TikTok from @spritefrom.mcdonalds showed Walz introducing his daughter to his fans. He revealed that she works at a homeless shelter and as a ski instructor at Big Sky Resort. The Montana ski resort has been growing in notoriety in recent years due to its expansive terrain, modern lift network, and its proximity to Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park.
From what I’ve researched, I haven’t been able to find anything on whether Tim is a skier himself. However, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t supported the outdoor industry. Last year, he declared December 9th, 2023, Nordic Ski Opener Day in honor of Three Rivers Park District hosting the Minnesota Nordic Ski Opener event.
In March, Governor Walz was able to unlock federal funding for businesses affected by the warm winter weather. Minnesota’s winter (from December 2023 to February 2024) was the warmest ever recorded.
“From skiing and snowshoeing to winter festivals, snowy winters are part of our way of life in Minnesota. The low precipitation we’ve experienced this winter has had a real economic impact on small businesses that rely on snow and winter tourism to grow and survive,” said Governor Tim Walz. “I encourage all impacted business owners to apply for assistance as soon as possible.
