ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine – Rangers at Acadia National Park are seeking to identify three individuals who were seen violating wildlife protection closures inside the park. According to a press release from the park, two males and one female were seen partway up the Precipice Trail, which is currently closed to support the protection of Peregrine Falcons.

Peregrine falcons in Acadia National Park

Peregrine falcons are federally protected under 16 U.S.C. §§703-712, or the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Much of the east face of Champlain Mountain, including the Precipice Trail, is closed to protect the Peregrine Falcons, their nesting sites, and the surrounding habitat.

Research has shown that nesting peregrine falcons are particularly vulnerable to human activities, which can disturb the adults and make them less attentive to the eggs or chicks. Human activities near a nesting area can lead to temporary or permanent abandonment of the nest by the adults leaving chicks susceptible to hypothermia, starvation, and predation.

The park notes that these closures are well marked along the trails, in addition to several online platforms including the park’s website and social media pages. The park is requesting any information from other visitors that may have been in the area of the Precipice Trail on July 24, 2024, or anyone who has information that might help. Tips can remain anonymous.
