TERRYVILLE, Connecticut – This mother bear wasn’t letting her day end in tragedy after her cub fell from a train trestle in Connecticut. The bear snapped into action, rushing down the hill and jumping in the water to grab the cub. It’s a bit sad at first, but then it feels like a movie, so it’s a good watch in general.
According to the North American Bear Center, black bear cubs typically stay with their mother for 16-17 months. The breakups are typically sudden, with the presence of a male when the mother is ready to mate often causing it.
When it happens, the mother may initially be hesitant to leave the cubs, but will start chasing them away within a day. The cubs will often make their own territory within the mother’s territory, staying for a few years. Males typically leave the area after a couple of years, while females will settle near their mother’s territory.
