LĀHAINĀ, Hawai’i – Members of the Jaws Water Safety Crew have a big job. Working with Kai Lenny and other professional surfers on one of the most dangerous waves in the world (Jaws in Hawai’i) means some pretty serious and intense rescues, so you know they’re hard working heroes. So when 2023 wildfire ripped through Lāhainā, it’s not much of a surprise that the crew stepped up to help in the aftermath.
“When Lahaina experienced the most severe natural disaster in recent American history, Kai Lenny along with the Jaws Water Safety crew spearheaded efforts to collect and deliver food, water and other supplies via jet ski due to blocked roads. Many others from Maui provided shelter, served meals and rendered aid.
The Maui Surfing Community has since been nominated for the 2024 Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian ESPY Award, an honor that recognizes athletes and sports figures who are using the power of sports to make a difference in communities across the globe. According to Kai, the recognition shines light on the Aloha Spirit and the Hawaii way of life.“
