Vista Wildfire

SAN BERNARDINO NATIONAL FOREST, California – A now 588 acre wildfire in San Bernardino National Forest has forced the evacuation of Mt. Baldy ski resort in California. According to an initial Facebook post from the U.S. Forest Service – San Bernardino National Forest at 5:46pm on Sunday, July 7, the fire was 1 air mile from the resort when the Vista Fire, as it’s been named, was just 94 acres.

The fire was first discovered around 1pm on Sunday, burning in steep, rocky terrain that made firefighter access much more difficult. Portions of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Lytle Creek area to Mt. Baldy are closed, as well as additional trails below Mt. Baldy. As of 5:46pm on Sunday, 250 personnel were on the incident.

By 10:34am on Monday, July 8, the Vista Fire had grown to 115 acres with 275 personnel on the scene.

The fire is burning in steep rugged terrain, the fire was active overnight. 4 aircraft assigned, additional aircraft, equipment, crews, and overhead personal have been ordered. Today crews will be working to flank the fire constructing hand and dozer line, utilizing aircraft to put out hotspots and dropping fire retardant to slow the fires progression.

By 3:07pm, the Vista Fire had grown to 588 acres at 0% containment. The steep, rocky terrain continues to make firefighter access difficult, but crews still attacked from both the ground and air. Hotshot crews and dozers cut lines around the fire perimeter, while aircraft slowed the progression of the burn.

Lytle Creek Road remains closed to the public, with access only to local residents. High temperatures continue to be a concern to firefighters as forecasts call for the same. This evening, the San Bernardino County Fire Department returned to Unified Command as the fire threatened Mt. Baldy. At 0600 tomorrow morning, California Complex Incident Management Team 15 will take command of the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
