Elk herd runs through Colorado backyard.

Seeing a solitary elk stroll through your backyard can be a serene moment for a homeowner to appreciate for the beauty of coexisting with these amazing animals, however seeing a herd of hundreds blow through your lawn is straight up of jarring.

The following footage was taken on July 6th by Genesee, Colorado homeowner Teresa O’Brien who got her phone out in time to film capture the scene as her dog understandably barked up a storm.

Prior to European colonization more than 10 million elk roamed nearly all of the United States and parts of Canada. Today their North American population is stable at around one million which represents a significant recovery from historical lows. In the early 1900s, elk numbers dropped to as few as 50,000-100,000 individuals. Colorado has the largest elk population of any state with an estimated 303,000 elk.
