There are 429 national park sites in the United States, but only 63 of them are considered National Parks. Just a handful of those 63 are on the East Coast, with a majority existing in the Rocky Mountains, on the West Coast, or in Alaska. But some are working to add a new park in Georgia, in and around the already existing Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park.

Ocmulgee Mounds might become America’s next National Park, albeit with a sizeable boundary expansion and a less-than-perfect set of logistical challenges.
