The jury is out on this TikTok Video viewed more than 700,000 supposedly showing a fisherman in Texas pulling a bull shark out of the Guadalupe River.
According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, bull sharks are common off the coast of Texas and been found many miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico (as far inland as Iowa in the Mississippi River). TPWD have not confirmed the validity of the recent viral video.
The video is cause for concern for the legions of tubers who spend the summer in Texas lazily floating the 230-mile-long Guadalupe River that stretches from the coast to the Hill Country. Check out the video for yourself and let us know what you think:
The City of New Braunfels is aware of the video and issued this statement:
TUBERS, BE AWARE:
Despite recent social media posts warning tubers about a shark being caught in “the Guadalupe River,” there have been no reports of sharks in the relatively shallow fresh water of the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels.
The Guadalupe River is actually about 230 miles long, stretching from Kerr County to the Gulf of Mexico and there are 6 hydroelectric dams along the river between New Braunfels and the coast.
Although it is “technically” possible for bull sharks to swim in fresh water, there are very likely no sharks in the rivers in New Braunfels…probably…
