COLORADO – Every spring, baby animals fill the world. From baby birds to baby deer to baby bears, all the young come out and fill your local woods. And every year, several people who think they’re doing the right thing wind up orphaning young wildlife by attempting to “help”. This is not the first time we’ve talked about this issue, this is not the last.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife released a statement on social media today urging the public to leave young wildlife alone. Young wildlife is routinely left behind by mothers and parents for safety and other purposes, so even if an animal looks abandoned, there’s a very good chance it isn’t.
“Many people wrongly believe they are “helping” young animals by picking them up, bringing them to one of our offices, or even taking them home to feed them. These actions routinely orphan young wildlife by essentially kidnapping them from their natural environment.“
If you are seriously concerned about a wild animal’s well being and have a strong suspicion that they’re sick or injured, leave it alone and call your local wildlife department. When people disturb the wildlife, they’re making life a lot more difficult for those animals.
“It’s simple…help mothers in the wild by leaving young wildlife alone!”
