This past weekend, risky avalanche conditions resulted in a large slide just outside the gates of a famous Canadian ski resort.

On Saturday at 11:30 a.m., three skiers triggered an avalanche in the Eco Bowl, which is situated just outside Big White Ski Resort’s boundaries. In particular, it happened just outside the backcountry gates of the Falcon Chair. According to Avalanche Canada, the avalanche had a slab thickness of 100 cm, a width of 100 meters, and a run width of 1000 meters. Luckily, everyone made it out of the slide alive.

As always, it’s a valuable reminder to be prepared for avalanches if you venture into the backcountry. This means checking avalanche conditions online before you go and bringing a beacon, probe, and shovel.

Currently, avalanche conditions at the backcountry terrain around Big White are rated as 4-High (very dangerous). Click here to read the report of the Big White slide from Avalanche Canada.
