WEBER COUNTY, Utah – Tragic news out of Utah where a skier died yesterday after skiing off a cliff in backcountry terrain near Snowbasin Resort.
KSL reports Snowbasin’s ski patrol responded to a report of an unresponsive guest and upon investigation discovered the skier had left resort boundaries to access out of bounds terrain. While in the “extreme” backcountry terrain the skier had an accident and re-entered resort boundaries.
Weber County Sheriff’s Office said the skier had skied off a cliff while in the Mount Ogden Bowl area about 1:30 p.m. It was estimated to be about a 100-foot fall. On Tuesday, Snowbasin Resort confirmed the man died from his injuries. His identity has not been released but Weber Fire District Capt. AJ Mason said the man was 49 years old.
“Snowbasin regrets to report that a guest passed away following an accident exploring extreme backcountry terrain on Monday, February 12. The skier had left resort boundaries to access out-of-bound terrain, where they underwent an accident that resulted in them re-entering the resort boundary. Ski Patrol responded immediately to the scene to provide emergency medical aid and await helicopter transport for the unresponsive guest. The skier was transported to a local hospital to receive further care, before passing. We offer our deepest condolences to the guest’s family, friends and all involved.”
