Some starling footage has emerged from this past weekend at Mammoth Mountain. On Saturday, January 27th, a sixteen-year-old teenage girl was caught dangling from the Stump Alley Express chairlift. According to a Mammoth spokesperson who spoke to KTLA 5, here’s how she got to that point:

“As the chair began its ascent, the guest, who for unknown reasons was not completely seated, began sliding off the chair. The other individuals on the chair grabbed hold of the guest and held her from falling as Lift Operators stopped the lift.”

A video shared by Instagram user @lunar_rock_maxx shows the girl falling, with the ski patrollers and bystanders failing to hold her into the net. It should be noted that deceleration nets are aimed to slow, not stop a person’s fall off the chairlift due to the velocity that they’re falling at. The ultimate goal with these rescues is to slow down the person’s landing.

The teen was brought to the hospital for evaluation. Mammoth Mountain issued the following statement to KTLA 5:

“Our thoughts are with the guest and her family.”
