Just off New Hampshire Route 49, which is how you reach Waterville Valley, is a little ski area called Campton Mountain. Owned and operated by the Waterville Estates community, it’s one of the most under-the-radar ski areas in New Hampshire.
First opened back in 1969, the New Hampshire ski area has had its fair share of ups and downs due to it not having a snowmaking system. This even included a closure of the ski area for most of the 2000s. Since its reopening in 2011, constant improvements have been made to the ski area.
With warming and shortening winters, Campton launched a Snowmaking Exploratory committee in 2013. According to New England Ski History, they tried a demo snowmaking gun during the 2018-19 season. These steps led to a major move this winter, where snowmaking is finally an official part of the ski area.
For this winter, Campton Mountain officially installed a snowmaking system. The TechnoAlpin TR8 fan gun allows them to make snow for their rope tow area. They opened for the season on Thursday night with the rope tow spinning. They will have night skiing tonight, and skiing tomorrow from 10 am-4 pm.
Ron Beard, who’s general manager of Campton Mountain. described to WMUR how they were able to install snowmaking at the small ski area:
“We’ve had a lot of stops and starts, now we have a reliable water source and with Yankee ingenuity and a dedicated staff, we now have snow-making at Campton Mountain.”
With tickets being among the most affordable in the state, this is a cool place to check out this winter.
