Winter weather means dangerous roads and lots of accidents. Though we’re all stoked to finally see some major snowfall across the country, it’s important to stay more alert on the roads and aware of how your car can handle the conditions.

This video out of the Tahoe area shows exactly why you need to be aware of the road conditions. Ski towns are great places to experience some major car accidents. The video was posted to Instagram by Joe Amrogi, recorded by Tramway Market on Tramway Drive near Heavenly Ski Resort.

According to a comment from Sarita Marie, who claims she was there when it happened, tourists, locals, and even a police officer were caught in the slide. The cars were accelerating fully out of control on the descent, and no-one was able to physically walk up the hill to warn the coming cars. 12 cars crashed with one going off the side of the mountain, but nobody, thankfully, was seriously injured.

The craziest was when the tow truck even slid out of control coming down the mountain. The person driving needs a raise because he hit the gas and drifted missing the cars and people in the road. I’ve lived here for years and that road is always awful but this is the worst I’ve seen it.” – Sarita Marie

It seems pretty clear that this was out of the drivers’ hands. But, in case anyone needs a reminder, driving in icy conditions means slowing down. Apply your brakes and accelerate slowly, and leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. Also carry chains in these conditions, and make sure you have the appropriate tires and gear before you head into the mountains when conditions are like this (I-70 regulars know all about this). Again, the people in this video probably shouldn’t be blamed in this case.
