Here’s a bit of a sad video (yet still kind of cool) to spice up your day, if you’re a fan of those depressing wildlife documentaries. Blayne Fujita caught this footage of a tiger shark playing with and then eating a turtle outside of Magic Island in Hawaii. Sad? Yes. But that’s nature for you.

The first clip, below this text, shows the initial video of the shark playing with the turtle. Some of it can be hard to make out, but you can see the head of the turtle pop out of the water for a split second. Poor guy.

The next clip, posted the same day as the first, shows what Blayne says is the last footage captured before the turtle was swallowed hole. It seems pretty hard to believe, but according to his comments, the shark really swallowed the turtle, shell and all.

According to KHON2, a shark warning was sent out the after the incident on Tuesday, October 31. The shark was apparently somewhere around seven to eight feet long. If you’ve noticed an uptick in shark incidents in Hawaii over the past month, you’d be correct. There’ve been over a dozen shark sightings in Honolulu throughout the month.

That’s because the big pregnant females from the northwestern Hawaiian islands about a third of the population migrate down here at this time of year to give birth.” – Dr. Andrew Rossiter

There are specific times and places to avoid during this month uptick activity, which does tend to occur every year in October (sharktober).

One of those places would be at the mouth river runoffs especially after rain, because sharks will be there especially looking for food. Secondly, try to stay out of the water very very early morning and late late afternoon when the sun has gone down and it’s almost dark. – Dr. Andrew Rossiter
