We’re all guilty of asking our friends to film a line while skiing. “Yo dude, you gotta get this shot for me, it’ll totally be sick“. Maybe we’ve convinced ourselves it’ll make us better, maybe we want to post it to social media to impress our friends and family, maybe we actually believe that we’re steezy skiers (spoiler alert, you’re probably not that sick [at least not sick enough to get a sponsor]).

I won’t pretend that I’m innocent of this. I have folders of lame footage from every year I’ve been skiing, and I have no plan to share any of it. Ask that question enough round the same group of skiers, however, and they’re guaranteed to tell you to frig off. A hard taste of reality, a little “dude, you’re not sick, give it up already”.

So we get creative. Maybe we buy a GoPro for those sweet POV shots (they’ll still look lame, sorry dude), maybe we set up a camera on a tripod for a nice fly-by shot (you won’t be in frame, sorry dude), or maybe we do what Real Skifi does, mounting a camera on a spinning gimbal thing for a sick moving shot.

If you manage to nail this setup, it doesn’t matter how good of a skier you are, you’re sick enough as an engineer alone. I would love to see this setup taking some killer footage of a full blown pizza skier headed down the bunny hill, but the rail ride works for now.

While you’re here, make Sur hot check out the rest of Real Skifi‘s stuff over on YouTube if you haven’t already. They’re a ski group based in Finland and they make some pretty darn creative stuff. Plus, they’re just sick skiers (much sicker than you, sorry bud).
