Way back on March 2, 2002, professional freestyle skier Jonny Moseley hosted Saturday Night Live with Outkast as a musical guest. Was it the best episode ever? No. Does it feel pretty heavily dated now? Sure. But we always love looking back to any piece of mass media that depicts the sport we love so much.
Like every one before and after, the episode featured a multitude of different sketches, but our favorite (and the only one that’s really accessible online) is Boston Teens: Ski Lift. There is a bit of lore to the Boston Teens series, but you don’t need to know it to enjoy the video as a skier or snowboarder. It really just depicts an incredibly uncomfortable ski lift ride.
I can’t say that I’ve experienced something this bad on the mountains, but I have had my fair share of uncomfortable rides. One of the weirdest is the guy with headphones in who won’t stop singing like he’s on the stage, but the fighting couple is also pretty special. Especially when they’re just really quiet, aside from the occasional snide comment or “you said we would go down a green” statement. The heat coming off of words like that is enough to warm you in the biting cold.
As always, Jimmy Fallon’s Boston teen is right on the mark. Especially the clothing that just isn’t ski gear, and the goofy laboratory goggles instead of ski goggles. If that character was more fleshed out, he could have challenged Donny Pelletier. That would actually be a pretty solid skit right there. A Maine skier versus Boston skier, what’s the difference and, of course, who’s better?
