The video below shows crystal clear ice in Munising Bay of Lake Superior on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

“Occurred on February 1, 2023 / Munising, Michigan, USA

The video was filmed inside of Munising Bay on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Myself and other lifelong residents have never seen the ice freeze over in such a manner. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. The ice was approximately 5-6 inches thick, providing a great opportunity for people to walk, ice skate, and ice fish on the bay.”

Why did this ice freeze so clearly? The answer is pretty simple, actually.

Here’s an explanation from The Weather Guys:

“When ice is clear, it’s because no air bubbles have been trapped in it. Lots of trapped air makes an object look white.

Lakes freeze from the surface downward. If a lake freezes slowly, the impurities and gases are pushed into the water below, resulting in clear ice.”
