Due to its remoteness and rising popularity, Crested Butte in Colorado is dealing with a severe housing crisis. One large development is aiming to ease this crunch.
Crested Butte News reports that a 13-acre parcel right next to Colorado Highway 135 is currently going through a review process by the Gunnison County Planning Commission for the potential use of affordable and worker housing. The site would feature up to 231 housing units, ranging from one to three bedrooms in each one. Called the Whetstone Community Housing, the site is located between the town of Crested Butte and the Riverland Industrial Park.
Unlike most NIMBY situations that have emerged in recent moments, the perception is mostly positive. Craig Geipel, who is the owner of Alpenglow Rentals, described the urgency of affordable housing to the Planning Commission.
“We need people that live here. We lose so many talented and hardworking people. I have shed tears over watching people leave our community who don’t work for me, who don’t benefit me, but they benefit others.”
