Last Christmas Eve, the Carpenter Express at Deer Valley malfunctioned, which led to 167 skiers being rescued by ski patrollers. While Deer Valley Resort gave some details on what happened, FOX 13 Utah tried to get the incident report from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The government agency refused to release it to them, which resulted in Fox’s appeal to the State Records Committee.

UDOT didn’t make these reports public due to fear that ski resorts would not record incidents or keep out key details. This may have made sense a couple of decades ago, but with social media and the internet, these details will come out sooner or later. Other states, like Colorado and California, also make their lift incident reports public.

The appeal was granted, and FOX 13 got the report. UDOT also agreed to release further lift reports if people request a copy of a lift incident report from them. If you’re interested in getting a copy of one of these reports, click here.

Shoutout to FOX 13 for doing some excellent investigative reporting here to make Utah ski lift incident reports public. Their video breakdown of the whole process from them is below.
