The North American ski season is technically underway as multiple ski areas in the Midwest were able to spin lifts on man-made snow throughout the week. You can read more about that by clicking here.
Congrats to the good folks in Wisconsin and Minnesota that are enjoying time on snow, but I think the majority of us are looking for a resort to open in Colorado for the season to really feel like it’s started, right?
Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Copper, and Loveland are all actively making snow when conditions allow, but it seems like A Basin might edge out the rest as the first open in Colorado.
Arapahoe Basin’s COO Al Henceroth hinted yesterday afternoon, on his popular blog, that the snowmaking on High Noon is nearly finished:

Snowcat On The Hill
We have made almost enough snow to get High Noon open. The first snowcat has begun its work. The operator, Scott, will spread the snow around.
This gives us a good sense of where we need to put the finishing touches of white stuff. Whenever you see the cat on the hill, it means we are getting close to opening day.”
Views from A-Basin’s webcam look promising, but it seems like they might need a little more time to fill in a few bare spots.
I’m gonna shoot my shot- I think A Basin will open on Sunday, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Is skiing on one groomed trail comprised of entirely man-made snow the most exciting thing in the world? Well, no, but I’ve long been a subscriber to the ‘skiing is skiing’ mindset. It helps me make the most of “shitty” ski conditions on the east coast. You should try it.
Anyways, here’s hoping folks will be skiing and snowboarding at Arapahoe Basin this weekend!
