“Here we have the guestbook that shows the signature of Princess Elizabeth from Buckingham Palace in 1951.” Lois Bijolle, Mittersill Alpine Resort GM

As the world morns the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, here’s an obscure ski related tidbit from her legendary trip to North America in the fall of 1951 before her coronation. WNUR reports then Princess Elizabeth dropped into Mittersill Alpine Resort in New Hampshire during her Royal Canadian Tour. No known photographs exist of her time in New Hampshire but historians believe it makes sense the princess would have paid a visit to the resort’s founder, Baron Hubert von Pantz, who was a member of the Hapsburg royal family. Only months after her time in the Granite State, she would be come queen and sit on the throne for 70 years becoming the oldest and longest-reigning monarch in British history.
