The major project for Sugarloaf’s 2030 plan will soon begin construction.

The Irregular reports that the Carrabassett Valley Planning Board has accepted Sugarloaf’s West Mountain Expansion development plan, leading the way for tree clearing to begin in the coming months. Further planning board and public hearings will dive into further details like road designs, building permits, the number of new condos, etc. Sugarloaf has completed 75% of the permit process with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and 90% of the permits with the Army Corps of Engineers have been reviewed.

The new expansion will bring ten new beginner and intermediate trails to Sugarloaf’s immense terrain network. The 450-acre new terrain pod will be serviced by a high-speed lift, as the new lift will be the old Swift Current Quad from Big Sky Resort. The new lift will be installed next summer and could debut during the 2023-24 season. Some of the other planned additions include a new skier services building, snowmaking on the new runs, and additional parking lots. In terms of new real estate, the plans include one hundred ninety-six new housing units. This will consist of forty duplexes, fifty-two single-family housing lots, and four condo buildings, which will each have 26 units(104 overall).

This looks like another great addition for Sugarloaf, which has added a giant tree skiing pod in Burnt Mountain over the past decade and continues to add new lifts, including a new t-bar for next winter. Now if only I can talk myself into making a four-hour drive up there.
