The world of wild and whacky sports competitions is a big one. From all the weird stuff Red Bull likes to host to the different local competitions like Steamboat Springs’ skijoring competition, there’s very few limits to what people will compete in. Animals also tend to feature in a lot of the world’s sports, like horse racing or dog shows, but what about dog surfing?

I’ve seen a few news stories here and there about dogs learning to surf. One will pop up every few years and take the world by storm. Did you know, however, that there’s actually several competitions relating to dog surfing? On August 6th, the 2022 World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica, California, and it looked amazing.

Unfortunately, there’s no full replays of the competition for me to watch and analyze for you, but there are plenty of clips floating around the internet, specifically on the World Dog Surfing Instagram page.

If I had to pick a favorite, I think I’d have to go with the dog with the blue mohawk, Derby California. He’s got both the style and the skills. That’s not to discount any of the other dogs in this competition. They’re all incredibly good boys and girls and deserve all the loves and treats in the world.
