Three cheers for Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue who put out a small fire Saturday on Mount Werner after a lightning bolt hit a tree near Steamboat Resort’s gondola.

The Steamboat Pilot reports the fire was reported just before 6 p.m. Saturday, as a series of thunderstorms passed over the Yampa Valley. Deputy Fire Chief Travis Wilkinson said the fire was contained to the single tree that absorbed the strike. The firefighters were joined by members of the Bureau of Land Management who hiked in, cut down the tree and put out the fire.

The fire was located near Steamboat’s gondola on the mountain, just above Ski Trail Lane, leading to it being named the Ski Trail Fire. Glad they were able to get there quickly and prevent the fire from damaging the land and the ski resort infrastructure. Cheers!
