Peanut Pusher“I don’t feel sore or anything but I know I lost some weight. My muscles are fine, it was just doing the back and forth that really took it out of me…and I have an old can of survival food from 1964 and there are little carbohydrate candies, and I was eating those.”Bob Salem, Peanut Hiker.

Carrying a peanut up Pikes Peak with your nose is a popular thing to do apparently, and I have so many questions. KRCC reports that fifty-three-year-old Bob Salem completed the trip up to the summit of Pikes Peak while pushing a peanut with his nose.

He completed the trip in seven days, which is the new record for such a bizarre feat. This broke the previous record set by rock and roll musician Ulysses Baxter, who did the feat in eight days. He was the fourth person to complete the climb with a peanut attached to his nose, with the first being Bill Williams from Texas.

Bob Salem faced a lot of adversity to reach the summit of Pikes Peak. The original plan was to get someone to go with him and carry his gear, but this didn’t come to fruition. He made two trips: one to get his backpack up as far as possible, and then by pushing the peanut with his nose.

He made the climb on his hands and knees and used a CPAP breathing machine mask with an oversized spoon to help hold the peanut in place. He believes that he went through two dozen peanuts through the climbing process, as some of them fell in between rocks, making them irretrievable. He fueled up by eating survival food from the 1960s: candies, peanuts, pop tarts, bananas, and crackers. When he reached the summit, he was awarded a jewelry box from Manitou Springs and two commemorative plaques. After completing the trip, Salem said he was ready to go home to shower, nap, and watch tv. The trip was part of Manitou Springs’s 150th Birthday Celebration.

I have so many questions about this: Why is this still a thing? Where did he get the peanut from? Texas Roadhouse? Five Guys? When he got to the top of Pikes Peak, did he start going around and selling peanuts to people like he was an usher at the ballpark? Why does that peanut mask make him look like Bane?

He clearly is the most legendary person in Colorado’s history, even more so than John Elway.
