Alex Honnold introduced the world to the sport of free soloing with his legendary performance on El Cap in the film Free Solo, but people have been climbing without ropes and harnesses for a long time across the globe.

The video below shows a skilled free solo climber passing a group of climbers on the Dark Shadows route at Red Rocks, NV.

It’s incredible to watch how quickly the free solo climber is able to just breeze by these experienced climbers without any gear securing him to the mountain. It’s just downright badass.

David Calhoun“My buddy and I were climbing the Dark Shadows route at Red Rocks when we were passed by a free climber. He was very polite about asking to pass. After a few minutes I made myself safe and let him by. I watched in awe as he cruised passed. I was about 275′ above the ground when he approached, which is the third pitch, rated 5.8.”
