A wildfire in Yosemite National Park has led to the closure of the famed Mariposa Grove, home to over 500 giant sequoia trees. NBC reports The Washburn Fire, which is actively burning near the lower part of Mariposa Grove, spans 60 to 70 acres.

“Firefighters are suppressing the fire from the ground and air. The Mariposa Grove is closed until further notice.” –Yosemite National Park

Mariposa Grove is home to 500+ mature giant sequoias which tower in at over 200 feet high. Back in 1864 President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation protecting Mariposa Grove as a site for “public use, resort and recreation.”

Sending our well wishes to all the brave firefighters who are battling the blaze to save some of our nation’s treasures. We will be sure to update this story as new information becomes available.
