Yellowstone New License Plate Number Based Entry System Met With “Mixed Reviews”

“This is crushing to the economies and it is paramount that we accelerate as quickly as possible getting more and more open as we can. We’re being as flexible as we can but there’s no question it’s going to be a really tough summer for these communities.” –Superintendent Cam Sholly

Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Cam Sholly checked in with Q2 News this morning to give an update on the new license plate number based entry system. The Alternating License Plate System or ALPS for short has been met with mixed reviews after going into effect last week. Park visitors were on a large part pleased with the simplicity of the new system, reduced traffic, and parking availability while local business owners questioned if it allowed enough people into the park. Its a tough time for the surrounding communities whose economies are largely based on tourism but Sholly working hard to find the appropriate balance of park entries while they rebuild the infrastructure damaged by historic flooding.

– If the last numerical digit on your license plate is an EVEN number, you will be eligible to enter the park on EVEN calendar days.

There are a few exceptions to this general rule, so scroll through our post and visit go.nps.gov/YELLflood for even more information and FAQ’s about the ALPS. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we navigate this unprecedented event together!
