If you’re unaware, the term “slut strands” refers to the two strands of hair that hang on opposite sides of a skier or snowboarder’s face. The term has been in use since at least the early 2000s, and while it’s most certainly controversial, some have begun to reclaim the words, including those behind the Slut Strand Society. Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, on the other hand, expressed her distaste for the words in an interview with InStyle.

“We need to change the name to beauty strands.  I hate the term. Beauty strands make me feel beautiful, and it’s such a cute thing.” Chloe Kim to InStyle

This will likely be an ongoing and lengthy discussion. The term likely won’t go away overnight, but it’s best to respect people’s wishes, so if someone says they don’t like them being called “slut strands”, it’s probably best to stray away from the language. Don’t be a d-bag, don’t slut shame.
