Labor Day weekend is widely believed to be the unofficial end of summer. Schools are back in session, the ol’ pigskin is flying, the flannel shirts are being uncovered from the depths of the closet. Outdoor enthusiasts are starting to look forward to ski season and some resorts have announced opening days for winter operations. The month of September also means the reintroduction of a certain seasonal flavor: pumpkin spice.

Pumpkin spice is quite a controversial subject. True coffee enthusiasts shake their heads at Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks pumping out these sugar-infused “coffee drinks”. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with a nice pumpkin spice muffin or cereal. This author has been known to work through a pack of pumpkin-flavored Oreos.

Regardless of your position on pumpkin spice lattes’ here are a few truly disturbing pumpkin spice items.

Pumpkin spice protein powder – While it is totally understandable to want to get “swole”, protein powder doesn’t need to taste any worse.

Pumpkin spice salsa – This is perhaps the most disturbing item on the list. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Pumpkin spice dog treats – Your dog is likely happy with the traditional bacon or chicken-flavored dog treats. No need to drag your four-legged friend into the pumpkin spice trend.

Pumpkin spice rum – Some of us are still having nightmares from cheap rum in their college days. Adding pumpkin flavor isn’t going to help the cause.
