Mad River Glen is one of the most famous ski resorts in the Northeast. Outside of hiking, Nature Center, the General Store, and General Starks Pub, Mad River Glen stays mostly quiet after the lifts shut down for ski season. Things are starting to heat up again this fall though, as various activities will get the public stoked for ski season, including opportunities to earn day tickets and season passes to MRG.

This Saturday-Siptemberfest:

This Saturday, Mad River Glen will host a Brewfest from breweries across New England, including Stowe Cider, Big Tree Brewery, and many others. The event is currently sold out, but if you’re interested in buying tickets, but you can try scalping some on their Facebook event page here.

“Our 2020 event was canceled by COVID, so 2021 will mark the 13th anniversary of SIPtemberfest, and though we’ve outgrown the deck, we still only have around 24 brewers and only about 800 tickets, making it the Best Little Beer Fest in Vermont. We’ve always offered people an unparalleled craft beer experience in the unique setting and familiar and cozy vibe of Mad River Glen. And with limited tickets, lines are never too long so you can meet and talk to the actual brewers. The beers are amazing, the people are cool, the food and the music are local and awesome, and -rain or shine- it’s always a great time.”

September 18th- Endurance Society’s Sky Run:

“The Sky Run will be held Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 9:00 AM to 1 PM EST.  It features a series of climbs that will eventually take racers to the summit of Stark Mountain. The ~5k has over 2,000 feet of vertical climbing. The ~10k has over 3,700 feet of vertical climbing. The finish line is at the summit. Once the race is over racers will descend to base camp for a post-race party. Participants are 100% responsible for getting down the mountain, vehicle support can only be provided in an emergency if injured.

Runners will receive an Endurance Society Sky Run tech shirt with their entry plus a medal for finishers! The top 3 males and females of each race will receive a unique award. Registration and packet pickup is from 7:30 – 8:30 AM EST.

The Endurance Society is an organization that is dedicated to providing extraordinary physical and psychological adventures to the endurance community. The mission of the Endurance Society is twofold: To create unique, life-changing, and mind-blowing experiences for adventure enthusiasts, and to utilize our members for community involvement.”

September 25-26 and October 9th and 10th-Scenic Single Chair Rides:

This is definitely on my bucket list for things to do this fall in New England. For only $15, you can make a trip up and down the single chair and soak in Vermont’s stunning fall foliage. The hours for both weekends are Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 2:30 pm.

September 13-24 – Mow Crew:

“Mow some grass, earn your pass! Mow crew is the best way to get an intimate look at all of the nooks and crannies of Stark Mountain, burn some calories, and make new ski buddies.

A little run down on how we mow our trails…  We use hand scythes to cut the grass, ferns, and shrubs on the steepest slopes here at Mad River Glen. Most of the beginner and intermediate terrain is mowed with a tractor, mow crew steps in to finish off the areas the tractor can’t go. We mow and move in a line shoulder-to-shoulder hiking up the trails as we go. It can be tough work but the camaraderie makes it so much fun! Truly, it is rewarding and at the end of the 10 days, you’ll have a full season ski pass and some cash in your pocket. Not only that but you will likely have learned something about the terrain you didn’t already know and you’ll have gained a couple of new ski buddies.

The day begins at 7:00 am and we mow until about 3:00 pm with many short breaks in between. A backpack with a hydration pack is highly recommended and you should also pack yourself enough food to get you through the day. There will be water stations along the route to refill your containers and likely a ride down on the chairlift at the end of the day to ease the knees. Most people wear pants and long sleeves to fend off bugs and protect them from the sun but a few hardy folks go shorts and tees, everyone wears hiking boots – no exceptions. We will provide the scythe, a pair of work gloves, a sharpening stone/tools, and water.

If you’re interested in joining the mow crew this fall please send an email to ry@madriverglen.com.”

October 9th,16th, and 30th- Mountain Work Day:

“The purpose of Mountain Work Days is the maintenance of MRG’s legendary tree skiing and regeneration zones in our mountain forest. This involves cutting lines as well as setting aside areas for new trees to grow. Everything is done with hand tools. Workdays are organized and led by Lars Bruns in consultation with ski area management. Mountain Work Days are a great chance to get out on the mountain, care for your favorite terrain, and learn about how northeastern mountain forests grow. It is hard work, but also fun and satisfying to see a ski line take shape, and how trees will grow in response to care.

We welcome both experienced veterans and newcomers to the mountain workdays.  Each person who works a full day receives a complimentary day pass voucher for each day she or he works.”
