Steamboat’s much anticipated new gondola broke down just one day after it opened for operation and the resort has not specified when it will be back in action. The gondola opened on Saturday but experienced a mechanical malfunction the following day at about 4:45 p.m. The Steamboat Pilot reports no guests were onboard at the time but two cabins were occupied with about seven employees. Backup motors eventually kicked in and the employees were safely unloaded. Steamboat’s digital communications manager had this to say about the situation:
“(It was) identified as a mechanical issue, not a safety issue. Monday morning. We’ll take as much time as necessary to fix it to ensure it’s not a problem in the future. We appreciate our guests understanding as we identify the root cause of the issue and take the time necessary to fix it. When we have more information on a timeline for reopening, we will update guests and staff.”
Late Sunday afternoon the Steamboat Gondola experienced a mechanical malfunction. While we work with Doppelmayr to identify the problem, the Gondola will not be running. Thunderhead Express lift will operate while the Gondola is being fixed. Stay tuned for updates. pic.twitter.com/TcBfFn0cCj
