Whistler Blackcomb has confirmed a 42 year old woman from New South Wales, Australia is dead after getting caught in a “skier triggered avalanche” yesterday on a section of the mountain that is permanently closed and off limits to guests.

The woman and her 36 year old male riding companion were in a restricted area above Lakeside Bowl on Blackcomb Mountain when the slide hit.  Global News reports the couple survived the avalanche but the woman later died from her injuries at the Whistler Health Care Centre.

Avalanche Canada reports the Class 1 avalanche was triggered by the male and female and occurred on a steep, rocky, south-facing slope near Whistler but would not release any further details.
