Val Thorens, a ski resort in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, France is dealing with a measles outbreak with 18 reported cases to date. Skiers and riders are being advised to check if they are vaccinated before coming to the resort.

The outbreak has struck during the busiest week of the season for the highest ski center in the Alps.

The 18 cases “are mostly young adults working at the station this season,” the ARS regional health agency for the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes district has said.

The numbers of measles cases have risen in the French region in recent years with 45 in 2017 and 84 in 2018.

The disease is highly contagious and can result in serious illness and possible death.
