3 people riding off-piste near the ski area of Cauterets were killed by an avalanche on Wednesday reports the Miami Herald.

So far details are unclear as to how the avalanche was triggered. The area in question lies close to the Spanish border in the French Pyrenees. The bodies of the individuals were not recovered until today. The victims were visiting the area from Bordeaux and Portiers.

From the French Pyrenees to the Austrian Alps, most of the mountain ranges in Europe have seen abundant snowfall and with big snow and wind inevitably comes increased avalanche risk.

*Our deepest condolences go out to the victims’ friends and family.
