A glacier collapse that prompted local authorities to order evacuations in the Swiss ski resort town of Saas Fee has scientists monitoring the Trift Glacier closer than ever reports SwissInfo.ch.

More than 200 residents of Saas Fee were recently evacuated after officials recognized instabilities in the tongue of the Trift Glacier that sits high above town. On Sunday, the glacier collapsed just days after experts identified a weakness in the glacier. Originally authorities feared the glacier would trigger a larger ice fall that could harm residents and structures. The collapse ultimately failed to reach town. Thank god.
However, that’s not stopping experts from continuing to check the glacier’s pulse. In fact, scientists are on high alert following the most recent collapse, saying that further instabilities will likely cause future problems.

The Trift Glacier began melting rapidly in the past decade, a change many scientists attribute to climate change on a global scale. The alps have been located firmly in global warming’s crosshairs with average temps in the mountains rising to alarming levels. Just this summer alone, a glacier-based summer ski area on Stelvio Pass was forced to shut down.
